Causes of Acne
Understanding what causes acne can help you prevent it. There are many things that can cause acne; however, eating chocolate and drinking a lot of soda is not truly part of those causes. Acne is generally caused by an accumulation of oil from overactive oil glands in the skin, dead skin cells, and bacteria. These causes will lead to inflammation in pores.
Tips to Prevent Using an Acne Treatment
- Wash your face to remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells, which can clog your pores. However, do not wash too much, as this can cause your face to become too dry and can irritate already existing acne.
- Use clean towels and wash your pillowcase often. When you do not use clean towels and pillowcases, they could begin to harbor bacteria and germs. This will cause or make existing acne worse.
- Pull your hair away from your face when you sleep.
- Shower after a workout as soon as possible. Sweat mixed with skin oils can trap dirt and bacteria within pores.
- Wash your face before bed. Never go to bed with makeup on your face. This can clog your pores, leading to breakouts.
- Clean cosmetic brushes on a regular basis. Clean them in soapy water and pitch any old makeup. Old makeup can be contaminated and cause acne and infections.
- Exercise on a regular basis to reduce stress. This will also increase blood circulation and penetrate oxygen to the skin, which could help to prevent acne.
- Water is an excellent acne prevention step. Drinking 64 ounces of water per day can detoxify your body from the inside out.
- Choose skin products that are non-comedogneic or non-acnegenic. These products should not clog pores.
- Keep hair sprays and or styling gel away from your face. These types of products will contain oils that can make your acne worse.
- For acne that is on your chest or back, do not wear tight clothing that can rub and cause irritation.
- Use an exfoliation to eliminate dead skin cells.
Acne Treatment
While people of all ages can get acne, the acne treatment you use will differ depending on whether you are a teenager or an adult. The reason you will use a different acne treatment is because the cause of the clogged pores that lead to acne differs. A teen’s pores are generally clogged due to excess oil; however, an adult’s clogged pores are usually caused by dead skin cells.
The acne treatment you choose must target the cause, or you could risk making your acne worse. Many commercial brand acne treatments are geared more towards the teenager. They contain chemicals that are too drying for an adult’s skin.
Prevention is the Best Acne Treatment
Taking the steps to prevent acne in the first place is the key to a flawless face. Whether you are a teenager or an adult, prevention is the best acne treatment.
