Importance of Choosing an Exfoliation based on your Skin Type
The key to healthy skin with the exfoliation technique is to choose the right exfoliant based on your skin type. It is important to determine what type of skin you have before you choose an exfoliant. If your skin is oily, dry, or combination skin, then it is important to purchase an exfoliant that will provide the correct amount of moisture. If you have sensitive skin or acne type skin, you may need a special type of exfoliant to prevent further problems.
Tips for Choosing an Exfoliation based on your Skin Type
• Normal Skin - Normal skin can be exfoliated about three times a week. For people with normal skin, a chemical, enzyme or scrub is recommended. A combination of both of these types will work for normal skin, as well.
• Oily Skin – Do not exfoliate more than three times a week. When you exfoliate too much, you stimulate more oil produced from your sebaceous glands. Choose a clay mask exfoliant that contains salicylic acid. Also, choose an exfoliant that contains polyurethane and silicone beads that are gentle on the skin, but will thoroughly remove dead skin cells.
• Sensitive Skin – You will need a very gentle exfoliant, and you should only exfoliate once a week. Natural ingredients are best for people with sensitive skin, as abrasive exfoliants may be too strong for your sensitive skin. If possible, use an exfoliant that contains natural ingredients, such as rice powder and oatmeal. Oatmeal softens dry areas on the face and reduces inflammation. Simply mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of oatmeal with water and leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse.
• Combination Skin – (oily and dry) – Exfoliate no more than three times per week. This type of skin lacks in sebum, so oil production should be stimulated in order for the exfoliation to work. You will need a stronger exfoliant, such as one that contains glycolic acid, alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA). Scrubs that contain polyurethane and silicon beads are also recommended. For dry patches, enzymes are helpful. Be sure to apply toner and moisturizer after exfoliation.
• Acne Skin Type – If your skin tends to break out in acne, consider a salicylic acid, clay mask or enzyme treatment. The salicylic acid will kill bacteria; therefore, helping to treat the acne. If possible, try to alternate the use of all three types mentioned above. It is recommended that you exfoliate no more than three times per week, as too much exfoliation could irritate your skin. Exfoliation is an important technique that removes the dead cells, which is important for healthy, young, and beautiful skin.
