Learning how to blow dry your hair properly is the key to a salon style look from home.   All you need is a good hairdryer, the right style brush, and a few special techniques to look like you just stepped out of a salon.   There are many professional salon-style dryers available on the market these days.   You will want to choose a powerful one that provides high heat and a gentle airflow.

How to Blow Dry your Hair Step #1 - It’s all in the Brush

The brush you choose has a huge impact on the result of your hairstyle.   There are many styles of brushes to choose from.  According to some celebrities, boar hair brushes are the best.   They are made from the hair of an adult boar.  These types of brushes are great for thick hair because the bristles are packed close together, and they are able to penetrate through the follicles.

The size of the brush matters.  Large brushes are great for untangling thick hair.  Medium brushes can be used on all hair types.  They will untangle the hair at the roots to allow for a softer finish.  Small brushes are perfect for curls.

There are even heat-conducting brushes that have a metallic part that heats up with your hairdryer.  It allows you to shape and style your hair with more ease and effectiveness.

Preparing your hair before you blow dry it will help to make your style last longer.  There are special products that will help keep your hair from frizzing up, and help give you a much smoother look.   If your hair is frizzy, it is naturally finer and more fragile than other hair types.   Healthy hair is much better to work with.   If your hair is frizzy, it is important to nourish your hair with a treatment of shea butter, jojoba oil, or olive oil once a week.

How to Blow Dry your Hair Step #3 – Pre-Drying

Before you bring out the hairdryer, it is important to absorb as much of the water from your hair as you can.  This is an easy step that can help to keep your hair from too much damage from the dryer.  Simply wrap your hair in a thick towel.  It is always better to allow your hair to dry on its own a little first, to minimize the exposure of heat to your hair.  The less heat exposed to your hair, the less dry your hair will be.

  1. Use clips to create sections for blow drying.
  2. Clip most of your hair on the top of your head.   Leave only a few pieces of hair around the nape of your neck to start.
  3. With a large round brush, wind your hair around the brush.  Begin at the root and work to the tip.  The airflow should be directed in the same direction as your brush.
  4. Use a hairdryer that has a nozzle.  Hold it perpendicular to the brush and direct it to the section of hair you are working on.  Be sure to keep your hairdryer at least 5 cm from your hair.  The dryer should never touch your hair, or you risk burning it.
  5. Brush through downwards.  Allow your hair to fall into place as you brush through it.  Repeat this brushing motion two to three times for each section.

Once all sections have been dried, turn your dryer onto the cold setting.  Apply smoothing serum to the ends of your hair to set your style.  Learning how to dry your hair properly is your key to salon style hair.
